Did the Thermostat Break?

The thermostat has a valve that opens and closes depending on the coolant temperature. When your car warms up, the valve opens and releases the coolant. The heating core heats the coolant and then uses the vents to distribute warm air. If the valve fails to open, the coolant cannot provide the warmth that your car needs when it’s cold out.

Does Your Car Have Enough Coolant?

If warm air isn’t flowing through your car, the car may have inadequate coolant. Without the right coolant level, less coolant moves through the heating core, and your car will not receive the warm air it needs. Check the coolant level or let a service professional at our service center take a look. Otherwise, without enough coolant, your car could overheat.

Is Air Trapped in the Cooling System?

Air may move through your cooling system, and while it doesn’t sound detrimental, it could become trapped in the system. Air bubbles can form, causing the coolant to essentially get stuck and preventing it from moving through to the heating core. In this case, a skilled service pro at our dealership can flush the system to remove the air bubbles and ensure that your coolant flows freely again.

Is the Heater Core Clogged?

Multiple tubes make up the heater core, which enables the coolant to move through them, visit the heater core, and then produce warm air for your car. A clogged heater core cannot warm the coolant, and your cabin will stay cold.

The heater core may be clogged from excess debris from the road, or it could be corroded and in need of a replacement. If the reason for the clog is the former, a service pro will flush the system. Signs that your heater core has a clog include using too much coolant, an overheating engine, fog clogging the cabin, or smelling a sweet odor in the car.

Is There a Leak?

If your car contains a water leak, your heater will not work properly. An experienced service pro may find a leak in the radiator, water pump, or hoses.
